Description:
Historic Pointe du Hoc to reopen in November
There is a little over a month to go until completion of the 9-month, 6 million Dollar project to consolidate the historic 25 metre high cliffs at Pointe du Hoc near Cricqueville-en-Bessin in Calvados. Since the time of the June 1944 landings, the cliffs have receded by 10 metres and the Command Blockhouse had to be closed to the public in 2001 as it was at risk of falling into the sea.
Part of the Pointe du Hoc was given to the United States in January 1979 and a monument was erected in honor of the American troops who captured the Pointe to reduce the risk to the landings at Utah Beach to the west and Omaha Beach to the east.
Following the completion of works, the site will reopen to the public in November. It is estimated that the monument attracts up to 500,000 visitors each year. The works will ensure the site’s future and will also allow the reopening of the Blockhouse to the public.
