Description:
In spite, or perhaps because of the recession, record numbers of passengers have crossed the Channel this summer on Eurotunnel’s shuttle trains between Folkestone and Calais and vice-versa.
The company reported carrying more than half a million passenger vehicles between the beginning of July and end August 2010; this was up by 17% over the same period last year and underlines the popularity of this fast and efficient drive-on, drive-off service. It is perhaps also one of the reasons why LD Lines Dover-Boulogne service was unable to compete and resulted in the closure of the LD Lines ferry service to and from Boulogne with effect from 5 September this year.
Eurotunnel also recorded the highest number of passenger vehicle crossings in a day when it carried nearly 15000 vehicles in total both ways on 14 August.
This is all very good news for Eurotunnel CEO, Jacques Gounon , who has always had faith in the viability of the cross-channel link. With the ferries suffering on-going problems in terms of strikes and technical difficulties as well as problems at Cherbourg, Eurotunnel passenger vehicle numbers are likely to continue to rise in the future.
