Description:
Monet to be seen from the skies of Rouen
For the opening of the Festival of impressionism, the largest impressionist painting in the world is being created by a team of 1,250 people in Rouen. The 600 square metre painting will be assembled on Saturday 5 June outside the Hôtel de Ville in Place de Général de Gaulle. The event will start at 6.30pm.
The painting will be one of Monet's studies of the effect of light on Rouen's Cathedral - 'effet de soleil fin de journée. The actual painting will be on display at Rouen's Musée des Beaux Arts during the festival.
The organisers have asked the 1,250 volunteers to each recreate a single panel of the painting. The concept is pretty simple: every participant carries the piece they have created above their heads and, by carefully rehearsed choreography, Monet's masterpiece will be assembled in front of your eyes. The results will be photographed from a helicopter and displayed on a huge 30 square metre TV screen for all to see.
