Over the next few weeks , in the Events section of guide2normandy, we will be featuring various aspects and events which are taking place throughout Normandy within the ambitious Festival of Impressionism over the period from the beginning of June to the end of September 2010.

The Festival of Impressionism promises to be the major cultural event of 2010 for Normandy and even France ; events will be taking place in various locations all over Normandy. We will be highlighting and describing these events. Not all the exhibitions and events will be taking place throughout the June to September period , so we will indicate the exact dates when you can see them. For example the new Museum of Impressionism at Giverny (Eure ,27),is staging an exhibition entitled 'Impressionism along the Seine' but only until 18 July.

This exhibition features fifty-five works painted along the river Seine, several of which have been loaned by the Musée d'Orsay in Paris and the National Gallery of Washington. One of such works includes the wonderful La Partie du Bateau by Gustave Caillebotte painted in 1877. Caillebotte may not be a household name as compared to artists like Monet or Pissarro but he is one of the most significant painters of the Impressionist movement. This painting captures the very atmosphere of Impressionism and its relationship with water, nature, and the fashionable leisure activities of Parisians in late 19th century Normandy.
