Description:
One hundred new student lodgings are being constructed at Le Havre University from recycled shipping containers. The construction is the first in France and should be completed in time for the return of students after the summer break.
The project, which is the brainchild of the town of Le Havre and engineers CROUS, represents an innovative move in the field of student accommodation. Even if the concept is not totally new, it represents a very fast solution to the lack of student accommodation in the town.
The containers are being installed in a steel framework which separates each unit from its neighbours, thereby reducing fire risks and sound disturbance. Each of the studios will have an area of 25 square metres and will be fully furnished with cooking facilities. There will be 20 ground floor studios adapted for students with reduced mobility.
