A Mixed Message for Air Travellers
After five days of inactivity, the airports in the north of France are starting a very slow return to normal operations following the cloud of volcanic ash that covered the skies of northern Europe. A process which is likely to take many days.
The reprieve follows the French Government announcement on Monday putting in place air corridors linking the airports of Paris with those in the south of the country notably, Nice, Marseilles, Bordeaux and Toulouse. Already some commercial aircraft are flying over the north half of France.
The Paris Airports have asked passengers not to turn up at the airport unless they have been assured by their carriers that their flights have been confirmed. Roissy and Orly have announced that up to 3/4 of their international flights will operate.
In the UK some domestic flights did operate earlier today but the air traffic control service has warned that a second ash cloud has already arrived over the UK and this has led to uncertainty about flights continuing. In some areas the situation is worsening and British Airways has cancelled many short and medium haul flights.
Travellers are strongly advised to contact their travel agent, airline or departure airport before leaving home.
