Update - Volcanic Ash Cloud Set to Stay

18 April 2010

Description:

Update - 18 April 2010

All French airports north of the line between Bordeaux and Nice are to remain closed until Tuesday morning at the earliest.  UK airports will also remain closed until Monday morning at the earliest although many carriers have already cancelled flights to and from the UK until Wednesday.

The turmoil follows the volcanic eruption in the South of Iceland and the ensuing ash cloud which is spreading across Europe at an altitude of between 6,000 and 10,000 metres.  As a result, air transport in Northern Europe has ground to a halt. The ash is dangerous because it could damage and even stall an aircrafts engines. Both France and the UK have carried out test flights using commercial aircraft to check the effect of the dust in particular on their engines.

The islandic meteo office say that the weather conditions in Iceland that are carrying the dust cloud towards Europe will remain unchanged for a further few days. On the ground experts are unable to predict when the eruption will end.

Travellers are strongly advised to contact their travel agent, airline or departure airport before leaving home.
