Description:
It has been reported that Eurotunnel may try to buy three ferries from the administrators of the ailing SeaFrance business which was put into liquidation yesterday with a view to leasing them to a new ferry operator possibly involving the SCOP co-operative set up by the employees of SeaFrance in an attempt to save the business.
Eurotunnel PDG Jacques Gounon is renowned for his bold management style but according to rival operator P & O, his plans may fall foul of European competition rules.
Chris Laming, P&O’s communications director, is reported to have said that there should be a level playing field as regards cross-channel operations and that this was not understood by the French authorities; SeaFrance is of course owned by wholly state owned SNCF. Mr Laming said there were European competition rules to be observed.
