Description:
The authorisation has been signed allowing work to start on the development of a coal trans-shipment facility at the Port of Cherbourg in Manche. The terminal will be fed with coal from Colombia and South Africa which will first be transferred to barges before being unloaded onto the quay awaiting shipment to English power stations.
Following this final approval, the project's developers, Louis Dreyfus Armateurs, expect the terminal to enter service in June. The facility will eventually handle over 4 million tonnes of coal annually.
Following stiff opposition from environmentalists and others who live in the area, the final go ahead was given with the proviso that the operators should take precautions to protect the environment and, in particular, the effects on wildlife and vegetation of the water used to prevent dust escaping from the coal stockpiles.
