Description:
Unexpectedly, and to many serious fly-fishers regrettably, the French government has issued a decree bringing forward the opening of the trout fishing season to today 13 March.
The decree applies nationally but there is concern among many fishing clubs in Normandy. Some are refusing to follow the decree and will delay access to Normandy rivers for at least two weeks.
To many it is an almost aberrant decision to advance the start of the season after such a long, cold winter when the rivers are still high, waters are running fast and trout may not have had time or energy to complete the breeding process. Trout will be hungry, stay deep and may fall easily to worms and lures. There is also concern that young migratory trout and salmon returning to the sea may be vulnerable.
The clubs, La Truite Yerroise and Le Pecheur Eulnais, in Upper Normandy will not be following the national decree and will not open until 27 March.
