Description:
It has been reported that UNESCO has warned that Mont St Michel may lose its World Heritage Site status unless plans to install wind turbines near the Mount are suspended and the planning permissions reviewed. The heritage committee of UNESCO has demanded a report on the environmental impact of the proposed wind farm, which are known to be highly inefficient in terms of electricity generation anyway.
Mont ST Michel is one of the most visited tourist attractions in France and the Benedictine Abbey receives over 3 million visitors a year. UNESCO fears that the fragile ecology and landscape around the site could be devastating, not only in terms of light pollution. Environmental groups have made objections to the proposals which is hardly surprising seeing the deleterious effect wind turbines can have on nature, birds, landscape, and local inhabitants.
A year or so ago, a similar project planned for the Isle of Lewis on the west coast of Scotland was refused through local objections. This is what is now needed for one of France’s iconic sites. There is no doubt that the UNESCO intervention is highly significant and will reinforce the case of the objectors.
