Description:
An ambitious 200 million euros engineering project was launched in September 2009 with the objective of making Mont Saint Michel, in Manche, an island again.
The Cousenon barrage project will ultimately result in the sands in the estuary surrounding the mount being washed away and the area around the mount will be allowed to flood. The sands have been building up in the estuary for centuries.
The three million or so annual visitors to this UNESCO World Heritage Site will soon have to park further away than at present and will have to walk or be bussed across to the island across the long, elegant curved bridge which is to be constructed.
It will be 15 years before the mount is finally surrounded by water and once again three miles offshore.
