Temporary Seine Maritime Shellfish Ban

Until further notice, the Préfecture of Seine Maritime has banned the fishing and the sale of shellfish from the 80km of the coast extending from the Seine Estuary  to  Butte du Câtelier at Veulettes-sur-Mer.

The ban is necessary because of  an unusually high level of the toxic algae dinophysis which has been detected by IFREMER (Institut Francais de Recherche pour l'Exploitation de la Mer).  The toxin builds up in the bodies of shellfish which feed by filtering the water in which they live and if eaten can cause severe intestinal problems. The toxin is not destroyed by cooking.
