Introduction
In the middle ages Argentan was one of the most important fortresses of the region and historically is known for its lace and tanning industries. Today it is metalworking and agricultural feeds businesses that occupy the left bank of the River Orne. The area around Argentan has long been a centre for horse breeding. For riding enthusiasts there are several riding centres nearby.
Geography
Argentan is at the confluence of the Orne and Ure in a heavily forested area .It is 188 km from Cherbourg, 58 km from Caen, and 133 km from Rouen . The town has good rail links.
Economy
The economy is largely based on agriculture and tourism although there is some metalworking activity.
Commerce
The town has a good range of shops and many restaurants and bars.
Culture
Argentan is the birthplace of the painter Fernand Léger.

Worth a Visit
The church of Saint-Germain - Dating back to the second half of the XIV century, the church is illuminated all year from 10,30pm to 2am. Guided visits are available from 1st June to 21st September. Opening hours: From 9am to12noon and 2pm to 6pm daily. Sunday open from 3pm to 6pm. Closed Tuesday and Sunday mornings and all day Saturday.
La Maison des Dentelles is located in the Parc de la Noé and houses a collection that retraces the history of lace making in Argentan back to the time of Marie-Antoinette. Telephone: 02 33 67 50 78. Opening hours: Tuesday to Saturday from 9am to 11.30am and from 2pm to 5.30pm. Sunday from 3.pm to 5.30pm. Closed Mondays and public holidays. Admission: adults - 3.00 €, students and children over 10 - 2.30 €.
La Tour Marguerite is part of the old town fortifications given by Louis XIV. The tower has a height of 30 metres and a diameter of 10 metres. Open from 1st June to 30th September from 9am to 6pm each day.
Le Donjon The remaining part of a fortress built in 1120 by Henry I of England and Duke of Normandy. The entrance to the Donjon is in rue Charles Léandre. Open for visits from 1st June to 30th September from 9am to 6pm every day.
Le Haras National du Pin - Set up in 1715 by Colbert, is the most prestigious stud farm in France, the National Stud. Guided tours include a visit to the stables. The chateau is also open to visitors. Opening hours: From 1st April to 30th September, the stud is open from 10am to 6pm every day. Sporting & Other Activities
Horse riding is a popular activity in this area which hosts the National Stud of Le Pin.
