Introduction
Giverny has become a major tourist attraction in Normandy by reason of its association with Claude Monet. Visitors come to see Monet's house and garden with its famous for its lily pond. The garden and house reflect the artist and many of his works reflect the pond and garden.
Geography
The village is at the juncture of the Seine and its Norman tributary, the Epte and is just 2km (1m) south-east of Vernon and 70km (40m) from Rouen.
Economy
The local economy is based on tourism and agriculture in the surrounding pastoral landscape.
Commerce
There are one or two hotels and restaurants in the village. One of the nicest restaurants is at nearby Fourges, the Moulin de Fourges in an ancient watermill overlooking the Epte.
Culture
Giverny is dedicated to culture through the memory of Monet as well as the many American artists who came to Giverny between 1887 and1914. These artists are now celebrated by the Musée d'Art Américain; the paintings displayed here are changed each year and represent American art from the early 1700's to the present day.
