Introduction
Le Bec –Hellouin in Eure , Upper Normandy is classified among the Plus Beaux Villages de France.It is a typical Normandy village with timber framed and beamed cottages and houses which in summer are all the more attractive with hanging-baskets and troughs of trailing geraniums.
Geography
The village is in Eure, Upper Normandy, close to the border with Calvados and lies between Rouen and Lisieux beside the stream which gives the village its name .The village is just off the A28 between Rouen and Alencon.
Le Bec-Hellouin lies in the soft Normandy landscape of hedges, fields and orchards.
Tourism
The village is a great tourist attraction and is particularly associated with the Benedictine monastery and the Abbe du Be founded in 1034.Two men were of importance in the cultural heritage of the Abbe,Lanfranc de Pavie, scholar and master builder and Anselme d’Aoste, both of whom became monks and priests at Canterbury and eventually Archbishops.
Also worth noting is the church of St Andrew founded in 1039 and the Monastery of Sainte Francoise Romaine. The village has important religious connections and has had for the past 1000 years.
