Description:
Located in the heart of the forest of Lyons, the Abbey ruins provide the opportunity for a peaceful walk full of history. The abbey was constructed in 1134 by Henry Beauclerc, first Duke of Normandy, son of William the Conqueror and King of England. Its name, Mortemer, is from the Latin Mortum-mare which describes the marshy surrounding area. The abbey was occupied by Cistercian monks until the revolution. Today, only the ruins of the 12th century church remain.
The 18th century building houses a museum where visitors can relive the everyday lives of the monks, the legends linked to the abbey and the region and hear about 'la fontaine des célibataires'.
Visitors can also see the 18th century dovecote which, in days gone by, helped to feed the Abbey's visitors.
The park has several lakes and many birds. It is ideal for a relaxing walk although for the less active, there is also a little train.
