Introduction
The Regional Natural Park of the Suisse Normande is in Calvados, Lower Normandy some 30 kilometers from Caen. The dramatic landscape of the region has been formed over the ages by the meandering River Orne. Its variations are diverse, deep valleys, cliffs and gorges, fast flowing water courses and small towns and villages.
For the tourist, the park offers an abundance of activities and the second weekend in September, each year marks the park's weekend of walking and sports.
The Suisse Normande is heaven for ramblers whether on foot, on horse back or even on a mountain bikes.
For water sports enthusiasts, bases at Clécy, Pont d’Ouilly and Thury Harcourt offer kayaking, rowing and pedalos for the young at heart.
Vélorail is another popular activity. This can be tried out on the disused rail line from Caen.
For the more daring, paragliding is a popular activity at the Pain de Sucre (214 m). The rocky slopes and gorges of the region also provide the most visited sites for rock climbing north of the Loire.
Not least, the rich supply of pike, zander, trout, perch carpe and other fish in the numerous water courses make the park a paradise for anglers
