Introduction
Le Perche is a Pays in Lower Normandy which is largely given over to agriculture and tourism. The region is spread across the boundary between the Departments of Orne in the South and Calvados in The North.
The region is characterised by green rolling hills, large forests, pastures with horses and a network of small country roads which wind between the historic villages and hamlets.
Le Perche is perhaps best known for the Percheron breed of working horse which, before the age of the tractor, was the great work horse of rural France. Today, there remain a number of stud farms where visitors can still get close to this beautiful breed of horse. But, the region is also well known for its black pudding and, not least, its cider and Calvados.
The principal towns in Le Perche are Mortagne-au-Perche to the north west, Nocé in the east and La Loupe in the west. In the South is Nogent-le-Rotrou, with its magnificent castle which dominates the town. In fact the region is scattered with ancient buildings. Perhaps the most impressive is the 18th century château de La Ferté-Vidame in the north.
