Introduction
The Pays d'Ouche is a wooded plateau southwest of Evreux and extends through the department of Eure in Upper Normandy into the neighboring Orne department in Lower Normandy.
The area is crossed by the River Risle and other tributaries of the Seine. The soil of the region is chalky soil and not agriculturally very productive. The soil is also rich in iron and it is this, together with the availability of water power, that historically led to the development of the metallurgy in the region.
The principal towns of the area are l'Aigle, on the River Risle, and Conches- en-Ouche, on the River Rouloir.
